General Overview of Cholesterol

High cholesterol, also known as Hypercholesterolemia, is when one gets too much cholesterol in their blood stream. It is not a disease in itself but can lead to medical complications.

In most cases, high cholesterol is usually associated with cardiac problems, or heart related diseases. It is caused by increased consumption of food high in cholesterol, usually food with many carbohydrates such as bread, pasta, and rice, that leads to an increased amount of triacylglycerides in the blood stream and then eventually can lead to cardiac and other medical complications. Also, eating foods with high amounts of trans fats can also be dangerous and lead to high cholesterol. This problem is not usually prevalent in youth and often appears in people who are in their mid-life to senior citizen age group. It can be diagnosed by a doctor, or through use of various devices which will calculate your cholesterol level and you can determine if you have to take action to reduce your cholesterol level.

The best thing to do is to avoid high cholesterol, by eating fruits and vegetables instead of the foods that have been shown to cause this problem. High cholesterol can also be inherited from one's parents and obviously, there is no dietary change that will be able to eliminate this source of cholesterol. Hence, the best thing to do is to combine better eating habits with the use of prescribed medication to decrease the cholesterol in your blood stream. High Cholesterol can be very dangerous and thus it I important to monitor what you eat and your cholesterol level. Due to the medical complications it can lead to, it is important that you work to reduce your cholesterol level before it climbs to even higher amounts.
